Hello Anonymous, If you husband went to boot camp Sept 24th he graduated near the end of November.

AV A-School Consist of

AT Common Core Pensacola 51 Calendar Days

AV I Level Pensacola 103 Calendar Days

AV O Level Pensacola 46 Calendar Days

All Students attend Common Core, then break off into individual strands.

You should be able to talk to your husband on the phone every day while he is in A-School so you can also ask him when he will be done with his classes. Your husband can ask his Chief about taking leave to come home. All that info about A-School is also on his Navy contract that he signed when he joined.

Hello Navywife2008, Hang in there. Did your husband just go to Boot Camp?

John said...

Hello Anonymous, It's not a sure thing that he will get to come home before he reports for duty. Where is he going to A-School at? What rate is he? After you are married you can go with him when he goes to his permanent duty station. Usually the Navy won't let you go with him when he goes to School. Once he gets to A-School he should talk to his CO right away and they will be able to answer any questions that he has. Hope that helps a little. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. :)

Hi John!
My boyfriend is about to enter A-school, and I was just wondering what kind of things I can send him while he is there. Is there as many restrictions as boot camp? Oh, also do they get to fly people to see them for a cheaper fare? And my our daughter has a Military I.D.(shes his Dependant), will they have cheaper air fare for her?
Thanks John!

John said...

Hello Amanda, First of all there are not as many restrictions in A-School as there were in Boot Camp.

My kids were able to have cell phones, laptop computers, personal clothes, and some other things while in A-School.

My understanding of what they can have is this. They can have most things that they would need or want as long as it will fit in their closet neatly. Every night and when they are not in their room they have to have everything put away and ready for inspection. So for instance a desktop computer would be a bad idea because it would be hard to put away every day. They can have their own clothes within reason to use when they are not going to class and such. They can't be offensive to others.

The best thing to do would be to ask him what he wants once he gets to A-School. That is what we did for our kids.

Ok, about cheep airfare. No they don't really get to fly people to see them for a cheaper fair. I know that sucks. My kids found the best fairs on places like Expedia and Priceline. They were less expensive than the military discounts offered by the airlines themselves.

Important!!!

If your Recruit is Grad and Go after Boot Camp they could very well be leaving for A-School that Friday night after Graduation and not have Liberty Weekend. It is best to ask them directly about their leave.

They usually don't get any other leave until after graduating from A-School. Therefor, if they are Grad and GO they will probably go from Boot Camp to A-School on the same day of Graduation and then are not authorized leave until after Graduation from that A-School. Ask your Recruit, they will know the answer, if not they can find out for you.

hi John The AV A School consists in AT,AV1 and AV0 days are 200 calendar days consecutive within interruptions?, he dont come home in this period? or before the boot camp?. He went to boot camp on sept 24 his graduation is on ends of november and in december is the A School, he dont have christmas vacations?

Anonymous said...

Hey John! I just had a quick question....As far as the first phase of liberty in A-School, you said he would have to meet me at the gate if were to see each other during the week....Does he have to walk? I, for some reason and I'm pretty sure I'm wrong, thought that they could have their vehicles in A-School. Is that not so?

Thanks so much! Also, you were right.... He's halfway through boot camp already! When this began I thought it would never end but time has really flown since I've started getting excited!

John said...

Amanda B. Yes he can have a car while in A-School. Most of the guys don't bring their cars to A-School because they will only be there a short time and then go to their next duty station. But you are correct he can have his car there.

John said...

wifenavy, He will have to ask his A-School about leave.

Hi, I am leaving for bootcamp on july 1st and after, I head to A school down in mississippi, for the building (BU) program. I am doing the reserves, becuase I am currently enrolled in college and would like to finish after I complete A school. Latley a lot of people have been telling me my job description (building) has had a high number of enlistees shipped over. Even as a reserve I was wondering what my chances were of being sent over. Either way its just a number I would like to know, If it comes to that I dont have a problem, becuase if I did I wouldnt have enlisted. I appreciate any response. Thanks

Hi John, My Husband go to Boot Camp in september then go to the A School in Pensacola. I think rent an apartment in Pensacola at this time. My husband live with us in this time?

John said...

wife2008navy, Your husband will have to live in the barracks while in A-School, he will not be authorized to live off base in an apartment. It is best to wait until after he is done with all school to move.

Hello, my boyfriend just got to boot camp 10/7/08. I'm here in Thailand now and he said that he cant talk with me or anyone else in 2 months even his family .I know it hurts me a lot that we can't talk each other for 2 months but i everyday talk with his family.I do worry about him a lot but i believe in him that he will be fine in the boot camp.He told me that when he will get out from the boot camp so he will come to me and spent time together. He said that he may get off after the boot camp a couple weeks.but now i just waiting for his letter that he will write to his family then his parents or his brother or sister will tell me about that.We both have very strong love and trust a lot in each other.I will do my best for us and also he said that he will do the best things for me and us. he is smart. I want to know that after 2 months in the boot camp so my boyfriend will take the time off and come to me? You know it very hard to me a lot cuz i'm far away from him and also i can't talk but i just hope that he will come to me after 2 months like he told me.

Kobby's Girl, One more thing. While he is in boot camp he can write letters each week and you can write him as many letter as you wish so you two can still communicate. He will also get a few phone calls while in boot camp so he will be able to call his family a few times during those two months.

Hi, I've left comments in here before...my fiance is in the Navy...he finished bootcamp and is now in school to be a corpsman.

I have really nothing going for me here at home and I'd really like to join the Navy but my friend said she doesn't think they would let me in, seeing as I'm bipolar and on medication =(
Is this true?

John said...

Hello again kalhprigkipissa, That's a good question. It really depends on how severe you disorder is. The best thing to do is to talk to a recruiter. If the first one tells you that you can't get in because of you being bipolar check with another one. I know that there was a girl that graduated high school the year before my son did and she had some psychiatric disorders and was on medication and she was accepted and made it through boot camp and a-school. Sorry to say that she was eventually discharged because she developed other more severe problems while out at sea. Just remember, you loose nothing by asking. :)

A great book for prospective recruits, and definitely for parents, is Honor, Courage, Commitment: Navy Boot Camp by J. F. Leahy (written in 2002, a few things have changed since but the experience is essentially the same) - you can get it at amazon.com, as I did. My son enlisted in the Navy in August '07, and I found it very reassuring. The book follows a division through an entire bootcamp session.
And families - you MUST do all you can to attend boot camp graduation! I had no idea what it would be like, but it is one of the most moving experiences you'll ever have.

Hi John,
I am so thankful that i discovered your site, it has helped so so much! :) I do have a question for you though, I'm not sure if someone has asked already but, i was just on the RTC site and it says that the maximum number of guests a Sailor may invite is 4. Is that true? and it also says "do not call for extra seats". You see, my boyfriend's family consists of his 2 sisters and his parents...where does that leave me? Will i not be able to attend??

Hi john,

I really want to join the navy. But i am afraid to tell my mother. How can i tell her?

my girlfriend aleah left to go to chicago and now im so depressed i spent every weekend with her every second i came into town with her theres nothing for me 2 do i really love this girl and hope that we will still be together and dont let this navy situation get in our way

John said...

Hello Anonymous, If you want to join the Navy just talk to your Mother about it. It has been great for my kids. Remember, to join the Navy you have to be an adult so it is your choice not your parents.

John said...

Mr. boston, I am unsure what you mean when you state " and don't let this navy situation get in our way" regarding the relationship you have with your girlfriend. If you love and support her you will learn to deal with it. The Navy is very important work and long hrs and months at sea. If you are having problems now I wonder how you are going to do when she is away for months at a time?

My son is getting ready for boot camp. As a mother I have one question that you may be able to answer. Where and how do the recurits do their laundry. When I was a recruit back in 1972 the females had washers and dryers. Do the male recruits have washers and do they do their own laundry?

John said...

cheryl92863, I asked my son and below is his answer.

John A. says (9:37 PM):
Yes they have washers and dryers
John A. says (9:38 PM):
and there is a small team of recruits that clean laundry

I GRADUATED BOOTCAMP JANUARY 13, 2010...EARLIER THIS YEAR. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE MORE CHALLENGING THEN IT WAS BUT I THINK ITS YOUR MIND SET, HOW BAD YOU WANT IT. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE BEEN IN SHAPE UNTIL NOW AND I THOUGHT BOOTCAMP WAS EASY WHEN OTHER FEMALES SAID IT WAS THE HARDEST THING THEY'VE DONE IN THEIR LIFE. THE RDC'S WERE TOUGH BUT MADE SURE THEY TOUGHT YOU RIGHT. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND I LOVED BOOTCAMP AND I WOULD GO BACK IN A HEARTBEAT. ANY PERSON WHO WANTS TO BE IN THE MILITARY AND GIVES UP AND SAYS THEIR TOO FAT OR NOT IN SHAPE ENOUGH IS WRONG. DON'T GIVE UP BECAUSE I WAS THAT GIRL AND I DECIDED I WANTED TO BE IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY. IF ITS SOMETHING YOU REALLY WANT YOU WILL FIND THE DRIVE AND YOU WILL SUCCEED. I AM PROUD OF MYSELF NOW AND I WEAR MY UNIFORM WITH PRIDE AND ALWAYS WILL AND FOR MY SHIPMATES THAT DON'T, THE ONES WHO LET THEIR BEARING SLIDE...GET IT BACK BECAUSE KARMA WILL HURT YOU.
