Understanding and Avoiding Malicious Code Attacks in Linux

Linux is a very secure operating system, immune to Windows viruses and trojans. Instead, the potential security threat lies in running malicious code - by accident or voluntarily. It's easy to avoid the most common attacks by knowing what to look for. Here are a few guidelines and examples of commands that Linux beginners should treat carefully.

Google released Picasa 2.7 for Linux

Posted by Picasa
Google has released Picasa version 2.7 for Linux, which promises many of the same improvements of the PC version, including uploading and downloading from Picasa Web Albums.

Further improvements include:

* Folder hierarchy views: Browse explorer-style through your photos
* Save edits to disk: Including batch saving
* Improvements to importing: You can now import into an existing folder.
* Better RAW support

And much more. If you want to try Picasa on Linux head on over to Google and download the latest version. Picasa should run on any x86-compatible Linux system.

I posted this entry using the new version of Picasa.

My Linux Desktop

I just updated Ubuntu Linux to the latest version after downloading the iso file for it and burning it to a DVD. I inserted the DVD into the linux box and re-booted the computer and booted off the DVD, formatted the hard drive again, installed the latest version and am now doing the 206 updates that needed to be done. Here is a Screenshot of my current Linux desktop.

I found a good article called "Why Use Linux?" that you might want to read. So far it has been smooth sailing here. I installed Synaptic Package Manager on this computer yesterday and it made things allot easier. Now the next step is to get Synergy to work so I can use just one keyboard and mouse to control both computers.

IBM offers Free software tools for creating and sharing documents, spreadsheets and presentations

A week after IBM announced that it would join the OpenOffice.org developer community, the company has launched its own standalone office application suite. Like OpenOffice.org, IBM Lotus Symphony includes a word processor, spreadsheet application, and presentation software. That shouldn't be surprising, as the software was developed using technology from the open source OpenOffice.org.

Lotus Symphony, which is currently in beta is available as a free download. This strikes yet another blow to Microsoft Office's dominance on the office space. Not only are Excel, Word, and PowerPoint facing competition from downloadable programs like OpenOffice.org and Lotus Symphony, but there's increasing pressure from online software like Google Docs & Spreadsheets and Zoho.

Turn any Windows XP or 2000 PC with an Internet connection into a CGI proxy you can use at work to bypass web filters.

I posted about this a while ago but thought it needed another post to keep it current. The circumventor freeware program will turn any Windows XP or 2000 PC with an Internet connection into a CGI proxy you can use at work or school to bypass web filters. Sure, regular web proxies will do the same thing, but isn't it cooler to have your own personal proxy that is ad free? You don't actually install the Circumventor on the computer that is blocked from accessing Web sites. You, or a friend of yours, has to install the Circumventor on some other machine which is not censored.

Download Circumventor here.
